The pleasant plaza Mayor was built during the reign of king Philip III in 1617 however the current design isn’t back to that period. After a fire in 1791, Plaza Mayor was designed by the great neo-classical architect of the Prado Juan de Villanueva.
The square depicts a rectangular area bordered by similar red palaces. Six gates connect the Plaza Mayor to main paths in the old city. During the cross of time, the energetic square was used as a market, a festival place, a bullfight arena, an execution area an open air theater.
Plaza Mayor is the principal square in Madrid and from which any traveller should start his journey of discovery. is famous for hosting street artists, some perform typical songs while others act like human statues. As you walk through Plaza Mayor, you will be surprised by very talented actors: Three headed monsters, human dogs, spiderman and even a headless man which make all the fun.
Other features of the square are the fancy outdoor restaurants and shops. It’s the perfect place to buy souvenirs from the many stores. At the center, stands a high statue of king Philip III on a horse.
