The square is where the first frankfurt trade fair took place. It was the venue of many fairs and festivals like the celebration of the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperors. Today it’s still the major location of Frankfurt Christmas Market.

The Römerberg is surrounded by historical buildings with varied architectural styles dating back to the 14th and 15th century: The Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen meaning ”The Justice Fountain” at the center, the city hall, the Old St. Nicholas church and the Römer.

The majority of those buildings were reconstructed and renovated after being destroyed during the World War II.

The square is full of vivacity, cafes, restaurants and shops.
